Water is part of our culture, heritage and our sense of identity. We use water for drinking, bathing, and recreation; its powers industry, supports agriculture sector, sustains ecosystems and tourism. Water and sanitation sector faces many challenges resulting from climate change, limitations in water resources and sanitation management, financing and governance, poor infrastructure, weak sector coordination and cooperation. In order to overcome the challenges the clearly defined strategy for the sector is required. This strategy has been developed in the participatory way by representatives of relevant directorates, organisations and agencies working in the water and sanitation sector and civil society of Dohuk Governorate. It recognizes the criticality of limited water resources, the shared responsibility of all citizens, the Government and civil society for management and protection and aims at sustainable utilization of Duhok’s water resources. It defines four objectives to be achieved by 2023:
  1. Water and sanitation related data management is introduced and maintained and data (especially on water quality and quantity) is available for everyone.
  2. Water supply and sanitation services are managed and used in a sustainable way protecting environment and water resources while allowing economic opportunities.
  3. Water and sanitation sector is managed in a participatory way and cooperation and coordination between related directorates is improved.
  4. Water and sanitation related information sharing with stakeholders and general public is improved. The strategy defines approaches and guiding principles related, among others, to data management, monitoring, service standards and performance including customer service and public participation.
